*points* WE HAVE CARS!!!! Wait…cars? Guess teleportation magic is less pertinent. Also hell yes, I love all these magic effects. Hello Azure and Phylo, it’s good to see you again!
…Hey how many cars do you think they’ve accidentally demolished having the training dummies so close to the car park.
Smashing cars wouldn’t be very responsible, now would it?
One of the things I’m most excited about with the reboot has been changing the order that characters join the story. Here we see Azure and Phylo who were late entries to the story last time. Azure particularly getting cut short before. This is the first time we get to see her powers. Those powers being creating a Japanese yumi bow out of ice and firing magical ice arrows.
The fact that the design of the bow follows the Japanese style of the weapon probably isn’t something that would come up in continuity but it was a detail I just had to bring up on my own since I put effort into delivering on the (subtle in from these shots) asymmetry of it.
Oddly enough Azure and Phylo were both RP characters that I played from that Homestuck RP I often bring up, with Azure being the “dancestor” of Vito. The person playing Vito didn’t get in on our alt timeline shenanigans creating stories for the other party, so I took up both the mantle of Azure and Phylo’s brother (who’s hanging around somewhere) for those stories. So Azure inhabits a weird place in my roster of old RP characters, as I played as her, but didn’t create her directly.
In very unrelated RP news, I made a character for a Shadowrun campaign recently that happened to be a Doctor with the last name Kolt, which I’m sure would be more ominous information around here than it was to the rest of my party.
Well hey, Sam only says that the knights are “Supposed to be” all those things…not necessarily that they ARE.
Also I totally agree! Phylo and Azure (Azure especially tbh) didn’t get a lot of screentime last time, it’s exciting to see them both show up so early! I especially love Azure’s ice magic; ranged weaponry isn’t something we’ve seen a lot of yet! I’ve never heard of a Yumi bow before this, that’s cool! Out of curiosity though; if Azure was Vito’s dancestor, does that mean she was one of the lady characters who didn’t originally start out as a lady, like with Sally and Sam’s earliest concepts?
I’ll also admit it’s comforting knowing another artists’ characters are homestuck derivatives as well…one of the concepts I’ve had rattling around for a while is also a Homestuck AU that got so far warped that I eventually just broke it off into it’s own original universe. I only just recently posted a piece of art relevant to it on my main art blog though, lol. I think it’ll be a while before I make any big art project tbh, I’m pretty shy when it comes to actually making my ideas happen.
((Also I promise I’m still making fanart but…I’ve had this one drawing of Sigvaldi that’s been sitting around for over a month now that’s been giving me a ton of trouble and quite frankly I refuse to start on something else until it’s done. Sooo we’ll see how that turns out I guess lol.))
Well, Azure was always a lady. That was actually part of why Vito’s player wasn’t sure what to do with her when we started doing side stuff with the dancestors. Vito and Azure had some interesting Japanese cultural references that went deeper than the usual stuff that anime fans come up with on the fly. Vito lived in a fortress on the back of a flying turtle kaiju (a reference to Gamera who’s franchise predates Godzilla) and Azure was a traditional feudal Japanese archer.
The contrast was intentional, they didn’t even have the same gender after all. But it was too much of a jump for him to figure out what to do with her in practice.
Homestuck’s setting is pretty good RP fodder, honestly. There is an endless amount of room to expand in your own direction and have next to no overlap with the main story. I’m actually proud that something that we had done was a plot twist later in the story by coincidence. Phylo and Torblad, despite regularly communicating and playing the game together were from different points of the same planet’s history.
There is no harm in spinning off from fan content. The earliest concepts that would become Suppression came from my thoughts on what I’d do if I made a Legend of Zelda game.
If people wanted to know, I snuck some of the “dancestor”/counterpart characters in to art in the past. I just never actually gave anyone their names so their connections aren’t really known. Here’s a summary of who people might have seen:
Known Homestuck RP Characters turned Suppression Characters:
Phylo T. Kuin
Kamine Sentor (becomes Kevin Sentor)
Solstice Disglair (previously named Solstice Kirae in early iterations)
Rhonada “Roni” Brinks
Lloyd Valant (becomes Coin Valant)
Torblad Corkwinder
Esra Astor
Vito Neuvet
Known Counterparts with Full Appearances:
Azure Neuvet
Counterparts Mentioned in the Story Proper:
Unknown Astor (I’ll let people guess this one but there is a drawing of them floating around Tumblr; they’re not referred to as “Astor” in the comic)
Unknown Kuin (Phylo’s Brother/Mara’s Dad)
Unknown “Valant” (I don’t know if he’ll be given his original name in the reboot but he was previously a Valant in the old comic)
Counterparts with Published Art (but currently has no given name or official appearance [AKA a model] in the comic):
Unknown Sentor (That’s right. Dante isn’t Kevin’s counterpart at all.)
Unknown “Disglair” (this one has had more than one appearance in pages I drew at some point)
Missing Counterparts with Currently No References:
