lovin the 2d demon power on 3d models man, btw i find the whole use 3D models a very uniqe appproach to a webcomic, was this you original idea or did you get the idea from someone else?
Well to be completely technical, the shadow claw thing is actually 3d, but cel-shaded to be flat and 2d looking. The end result looks about the same as if I had drawn it on, but is alot simpler in the long run for keeping the thing consistent.
As for why 3d in the first place? If there is any other webcomic that does it, I haven’t seen it. I went to school for animation, but an unfortunately timed injury to my hand (it’s been years it’s fine now) left me having to repeat some crappy still life drawing classes that I couldn’t stand, so I ended up at a different school and focused on more computer based art. Me and 3d just clicked from day one after that.
I think it’s application to being a comic owes alot to the ideas that founded sprite comics… both use video game style art, and both front load most of the work into designing everything. I, of course, have the advantage of being able to get alot more out of a model than someone else can get out of a sprite edit of Megaman or something.
And thus I wrote the lifestory of this comic in a reply to a comment… maybe I should copy some of this down and make an about page.
Just so you know, there is one other comic that I know of that uses 3d modeling: The Dreamland Chronicles. Admittedly they have a whole team of film-quality guys churning out the models and it’s been running far longer than your comic, but they do some seriously awesome work.
Though I did drop their storyline some time ago and I prefer the plot of your comic over theirs at the moment. Love what you do here, keep it up.
Now now Charlie, don’t taunt the supervillain.
